Integration of EV batteries to the smart grid to empower mobile and distributed storage of renewable energy

Awarded: NOK 0.30 mill.

The Paris agreement and the policy initiatives of the European Union set ambitious goals to increase share of renewables, achieve energy savings and increase renewables in transport sector. The INVADE proposal seeks to contribute to these targets by proposing an integrated concept where a capacity of the EV batteries as a renewable energy storage throughout their lifetime is explored and integrated with novel technologies in smart grid - IoT, big data analytics, flexibility management systems for demand-response and other concepts. Our approach will enable green growth and improve energy experience through 1) smart integration of sustainable energy systems and services, 2) redefined business models, and 3) optimized the value creation from renewable energy resources, with all relevant stakeholders involved. Key questions to answer are: 1) How to create flexibility management system which is flexible in various different dimensions like in terms of energy production, storage, mobility and stakeholders? 2) How to integrate and develop further novel ITC solutions into energy industry to improve performance, profit and security? 3) How to investigate and predict EV battery condition to ensure safe and efficient installations, and how to optimize sizing, positioning and scheduling of EV batteries and other storage in the distribution grid? 4) How to ensure successful large scale pilots and optimal integration in between the research results and pilots? 5) How to develop and verify competitive business models and new service potential that would create benefits for all stakeholders?
