Disseminating the World. Communication and publication projects connected to the SAMKUL-project "Synchronizing the World" (SYNCHRO)

Awarded: NOK 0.69 mill.

As our work in the project "Synchronizing the World: the Making of Modern Progress" unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that what we are doing might have a degree of impact we had not really envisioned when we set out. Hence, we want to take the opportunity offered by the SAMKUL call to see if we can increase the international dissemination and impact of what we are doing, by five different strategies, targeting different audiences and, in a sense, different moments in the history of knowledge: a non-lnear MOOC, a book series, a network, a workshop, and an international conference. In this way we are able to address and communicate with very different academic audiences, both more general and more specialized, across geographic and disciplinary boarders, thus making another effort to achieve the ambitions of cross-disciplinarity and internationalization, at the core of both SAMKUL and "Synchronizing the World". Many of the elements in this comprehensive dissemination strategy are gathered at the website temporalities.no, where we have posted the MOOC-lectures as well as readings and definitions of key concepts.

As our work in the project "Synchronizing the World: the Making of Modern Progress" proceeds, and especially in a phase, when we are all immersed in different academic settings around the globe, it becomes obvious that what we are doing might have a degree of impact we had not really envisioned when we set out. Hence, we want to take the opportunity offered by the SAMKUL call to see if we can increase the international dissemination and impact of what we are doing, by five different strategies, targeting different audiences and, in a sense, different moments in the history of knowledge - a MOOC, a book series, a network, a workshop, and an international conference. In this way we are able to address and communicate with very different academic audiences, both more general and more specialized, across geographic and disciplinary boarders, thus making another effort to achieve the ambitions of cross-disciplinarity and internationalization, at the core of both SAMKUL and SYNCHRO. The projects in question are the following, explained in more detail in the attached project description 1. MOOC: Time and the World: Globalization, Empire, Technoscience. 2. Book Series: Key Concepts of Ottoman History 3. The Nahda Working Group 4. Cooperative workshop, UC Irvine and UiO: The Politics of Futures: Science Fiction and Sustainability 5. The 2017 Conference of the History of Concepts Group
