INtroducing personalized TReatment Of Mental health problems using Adaptive Technology

Alternative title: Persontilpasset teknologi-basert psykologisk behandling

Awarded: NOK 48.9 mill.

Mental health problems are a major public health concern worldwide. Innovative technologies represent huge opportunities for prevention, mapping and treatment of mental health disorders. The vision of " INTROducing Mental health through Adaptive Technology " (INTROMAT) is to improve access and quality in psychological treatment for people with mental health disorders. The project started up on September 1st 2016. A consortium agreement, dissemination and communication plans was developed within the first 6 months of the project, our dissemination and communication plan was updated spring of 2019. INTROMAT have held four general assemblies for all partners, have a well established steering group where partners from all project sectors are represented and that actively contributes guidance and helps the project management prioritize. We also have meetings with work package managers and project participants in accordance with our project plan. All of the activities in the project are planned, and carried out, in accordance with our internal project plans. The main activities until now have been development, evaluating and testing of digital health services. Our work has primarily been tied to the cases Youth med fear of public speaking, Early discovery of episodes with bipolar disease, Living with ADHD, Cognitive residual symptoms after depression and Psychosocial support for women after gynecological cancer. Through our work packages and the five cases we have started working on all our 7 central objectives: 1.) Establish user involvement with future users (adults with ADHD, former gynecological cancer patients, adults post treatment for depression and youth with fear of public speaking) to develop and evaluate different interventions. 2.) Develop monitoring and support systems by starting to analyze voice- and actigraph data from patients with bipolar disorders using machine learning. A part of this has been to investigate safe data storage options. 3.) Develop innovative treatment modules for adolescents with fear of public speaking, adults with ADHD in the form of biofeedback, psychosocial support for women after gynecological cancer, adults with cognitive symptoms after depression. 4.) Develop the premises for a technology architecture based on the clinical needs in INTROMAT as well as national and international standards. The implementation of the reference architecture is well on its way and will serves as a foundation for the continued development in the project. 5.) Completed and planed studies of clinical validity and effect of interventions. 6.) Further develop a work process from clinical needs to clinical tested digital intervention through cross disciplinary collaborations in the project. 7.) Explore and make innovation possible for our industry partners and in the health sector. The INTROMAT project has carried out researcher gathering, where all the researchers in the project gather for a two day workshop. The focus for these gatherings has, among other things been on adaptiveness. At the end of the project our two interventions will be freely available via Helsenorge (stressmestring) and ung.no (UngSpotlight); two interventions will be starting in the health services in August 2022 (MinADHD and Gynea) and we are in dialog about the use of the other programs. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic we pooled our resources and created an intervention for those experiencing increased stress and rumination as a result of the pandemic. Based on these experiences Helse Bergen have established a new team of experts on developing digital content. Collaboration between the partners in INTROMAT will be continued in new projects, including en PhD financed by Helse Vest (ADHD) and the project UngMeistring witch is financed by Pilot Helse. One of our business partners Youwell has had a considerable development based on the collaboration in INTROMAT and has recently been bought in as a digital tool both by Helse Norge and Helse Vest RHF.

Mental health problems are a major public health concern worldwide. New technologies represent huge opportunities for innovations in the field of mental health. The vision of "INtroducing personalized TReatment Of Mental health problems using Adaptive Technology" (INTROMAT) is to improve public mental health with innovative ICT. The main objective for INTROMAT is to increase access to and quality of mental health services by developing a scalable and flexible infrastructure with engaging and adaptive interfaces that can be integrated with existing systems. The system will allow use across individuals, mental health problems and clinical settings, with a documented impact on health. INTROMAT will address critical challenges through following objectives: (1) Establish user involvement in treatment development with the help-seekers, patients, relatives, health personnel, policy makers and health services; (2) Develop monitoring and support systems with continuous adaptive guidance, based on input from wearables and smartphone carried by the user; (3) Develop innovative treatment modules that can be used across problems and contexts; (4) Develop the premises for an architecture supporting a flexible and modular core clinical process that can be integrated in the health services; (5) Document the feasibility, validity and clinical efficacy of the treatment technologies; (6) Develop and validate a work-process from clinical needs to clinically tested interventions; (7) Fulfil the innovation potential for industry and the health services transferred to other areas of healthcare. INTROMAT will progress state- of-the-art within machine learning, mobile technology, multimedia technology, system modelling, interaction design and psychology. The results of INTROMAT are expected to increase access to evidence-based mental health services, increase digital collaboration between the health services, and increase uptake and use of treatment technologies in the health services
