For the maritime sector to be able to use hydrogen as an environmentally friendly fuel, such as is currently taking place in the automotive industry, an enabling factor is company working solely with developing and delivering hydrogen solutions adapted to maritime use. Hydrogen is now emerging as a substitute for fossil fuels in the automotive sector, together with electric batteries. Major players nationally and internationally invests significantly in hydrogen technology and launching new solutions now. Cars is the market that gets the most attention, but hydrogen is potentially even more suitable for marine use. For hydrogen to be used as fuel in ships and boats there must be developed customized solutions that take into account the maritime industry needs and regulatory authority requirements. Kjeller Innovasjon (KI) and Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE) has started the company Bluecraft AS to develop and deliver the best hydrogen fuel cell modules for the international maritime market, with Norway as the most attractive domestic market to launch in. The product Bluecraft AS will supply a standard module consisting of several fuel cells. A module can be combined with several identical modules depending on boat size, so you can cover everything from small boats to ferries. The module consists of hardware and software and the possibility of patenting the unique optimal design. The modules interface with known energy systems created by the major players on the market, ABB is a partner in the project. The module will optimize the effect of the cells and be adapted to maritime conditions (e.g. requirements for about 20 000 operating hours vs. only 8,000 for the car, and solutions that take into account the salt sea air that affects the cells). The product will be an optimized solution based on continuously available technology and mass-produced components. Global operators set right now up production lines for fuel cells to be several times cheaper than cells tha
