Following the Paris Climate Agreement reached at COP21 last year, the need for carbon negative solutions has been more firmly placed on the map. Before this, Bellona raised awareness of BIio-CCS during the Carbon negative Conference 2015 and at two side-events at COP21 in Paris covering Bio-CCS, with the support of the Norwegian Research Council. Bio-CCS was in 2014 described by the IPCC as one of four key technologies in the battle against climate change. After Paris, the IPCC has been tasked with presenting a new report on emission scenarios for a 1.5°C target, as set by the Paris Agreement?s article 2. Along with the Agreement?s article 4, which says in mid-century anthropogenic emissions are to be balanced by sinks, it is expected that the forthcoming IPCC report will dedicate much space to Bio-CCS. Nevertheless, knowledge of Bio-CCS in Norway, Europe and globally remains relatively low and there is little appetite for dialogue as some view carbon removal strategies as a distraction from the many other climate measures which need immediate action. Therefore, where the first edition of the Carbon Negative Conference focused on technologies, storage safety and supply chains, this second edition will focus on the ways in which BECCS can and must be undertaken parallel to all other necessary climate efforts. Bellona believes it is necessary to create good meeting places for Norwegian and international actors for dialogue about the technologies that must be in place to achieve carbon negative emissions.
