Nuclear shapes and resonances in research and education

Alternative title: Forskning og utdanning på atomkjernens fasonger og resonanser

Awarded: NOK 4.5 mill.

The INTPART partnership project was initiated to strengthen the research and education collaboration in nuclear physics of UiO with the University of California Berkeley (UCB), USA, and the University of Stellenbosch (SUN) and iThemba Labs, South Africa. The first objective was to perform excellent research and involve students in the research projects. The project helped increase master and PhD student participation in cutting edge research, including experiments to study exotic nuclei at ISOLDE, CERN, and complementary experiments at iThemba, LBNL Berkeley, and at the Oslo Cyclotron Laboratory (OCL). Collaboration meetings, scientific workshops, and summer schools were organized. Another objective was to make student exchange on all levels easier, by getting good agreements in place between the universities and pre-approved bachelor course packages. A third objective was to develop collaboration on education and develop intensive courses for master and PhD students which will give credits at all 3 universities. These have been arranged twice a year - in Oslo (June) and South Africa (November). The summer schools have covered different topics on nuclear shapes and resonances. At the summer schools, students from all three universities have been able to join. During all summer schools and other events, there have been held collaboration meetings with representatives from the different facilities to discuss progress and future experiments. The following summer schools have been held: Fission and Nuclear Reactions, Oslo 2017 Lecturers from: UCB (3) and UiO (2). Students: 4 from UiO, 4 from UCB and 4 from SUN. Advanced Nuclear Reactions and Applications to AStrophysics, Stellenbosch 2017 Lecturers from: UiO (3), SUN, Michigan State University (MSU) and Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The Oslo Method, Oslo 2018 Lecturers: UCB (2), UiO (3). Students: 7 from UiO, 2 from UCB and 5 from SUN Shell Model Calculations, Stellenbosch 2018 Lecturers: University of Tokyo, iThemba, UCB, and UiO (2). Students: 7 from UiO, 7 from SUN Resonances in Atomic Nuclei, Oslo 2019 Lecturers: University of Groningen, iThemba, TU Darmstadt and UiO. Students: 7 from UiO, 3 from UCB and 8 from SUN (+1 from Konan, Japan) Advanced Nuclear Reactions and Applications to AStrophysics, South Africa 2019 Lecturers: UiO (5), SUN, UCB, ULB, CEA (France). Students: 12 from UiO, 4 from SUN/iThemba, 1 from UCB (+4 from Japan and 1 fra TU-Darmstadt). There is a strong symbiotic relationship between the current INTPART project, and an ongoing INTPART project we have with four institutions in Japan (Computational Genomics Team Bioinformatics Group RIKEN, University of Tokyo, Konan University og RIKEN Nishina Center ofr Accelerator-Based Science), and participants from Japan were supported by that project. In our application of extension of the current project, TU-Darmstadt is a new collaborator, and for this summer school they wanted to send one student to check out the project. Travel and living expenses for conferences have been given to students and academic professionals from the collaborating universities. At all conferences and workshops, both MSc and PhD students have presented their research, either through talks or posters. The following conferences have been supported: 6th Workshop on Level Densities and Gamma Strength-Functions, Oslo 2017 Participants supported by the project: 17 14th Nordic Meeting on Nuclear Physics, Svalbard 2018 Participants supported by the project: 26 Compound Nuclear Reactions Conference, Berkeley 2018 Participants supported by the project: 6 7th Workshop on Level Densities and Gamma Strength-Functions, Oslo 2019 Participants supported by the project: 47 African Nuclear Physics Conference 2019 Participants supported by the project: 3 In addition to support for summer schools and conferences, the project has been able to support shorter and longer trips to and from the collaborating institutions. Short mobility stays have been done to perform experiments at the different laboratories, and to discuss and cooperate with world-leading experts in the field. In November 2017 an MoU signing between iThemba Labs and it was done. All goals of a better collaboration between UiO, SUN and UCB are achieved.

-The FRIPRO Nuclear shapes and resonances has greatly benefited from this INTPART project which has allowed PhD and master students to participate in and contribute to cutting edge research at iThemba, Berkely and Oslo -The INTPART project has lead to six two-week intensive schools offering specialized courses in the field of nuclear physics, which gave credits to PhD and master students from partner institutions -Ca. five collaboration meetings each year focusing on writing scientific papers for publication and planning new experiments/projects. Two new on-going master projects on medical isotope production and an SFI application fall 2019 -Students have increased their professional skills by holding presentations at the summer schools and conferences, as well as hands-on computational training and scientific writing -Co-supervision of students -Tightened collaboration between UiO, UCB and iThemba/SUN and increased student network

The research project addresses some of the key questions of modern nuclear physics: How does the nuclear structure change with temperature? How do nuclear shapes and the shell structure evolve across the nuclear chart toward more exotic nuclei? Providing experimental data related to these questions is essential to benchmark and improve theoretical nuclear structure models. It can furthermore have an impact on nuclear astrophysics, helping to understand how heavy elements are made in the universe, and improve our understanding of reactions occurring in nuclear reactors. It includes experiments to study exotic nuclei at ISOLDE, CERN and complementary experiments at IThemba Labs, LBNL Berkeley and the Oslo Cyclotron. The INPART project aims to strengthen collaboration with University of California Berkeley, USA, iThemba Labs and the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Both scientifically and for education. This project also aims to increase master and PhD student participation in cutting edge research, by supporting their travel to the experiments at ISOLDE CERN, at iThemba LABS, South Africa, LBNL Berkeley, USA and at the Oslo Cyclotron, Norway. We will also organize collaboration meetings, scientific workshops and summer schools. Make student exchange at all levels easier, by getting good agreements in place between the Universities and pre-approved bachelor course packages. We will develop and teach intensive courses for master (and PhD) students which will give credits at all 3 universities. The project is divided in 3 work packages focused on Research, education and student exchange.
