Metal production - education, competance and research

Alternative title: Norway-South Africa MetProd

Awarded: NOK 3.9 mill.

There is some clusters in the world that excels when it comes to ferroalloy production, and Norway and South Africa is two of the prominent production and research-environments. There is however a lack of cooperation today between these communities, though there has been some minor actions and personal collaborations. The main part of the project have been exchange of personnel both from Norway to South Africa, and from South Africa to Norway. In addition to an increased collaboration, the project has also focused on common research and common development of educational materials during the stays. The main partners are NTNU and SINTEF in Norway and North- West University and Mintek in South Africa. The projects have focused on exchange of senior researchers, like Prof.Merete Tangstad from NTNU, Jan Erik Olsen from SINTEF, Joalet Steenkamp from Mintek, Prof. Paul Beukes from North West University to mention a few. It has also focused on exchange on PhD level (2 persons), cooperation in seminars/conferences like Infacon2018 and Tapping conference. In 2019 a number of exchange stay was also initiated. Two MSc students stayed at NTNU as a part of their MSc study in 2019. Both were working in research projects from the NRC. It has been a number of common publications as well as a common book chapter from the partners in the book ?New Trends in Coal conversion?. In 2018 also the EU cooperation project Prema started. This was initiated in the Intpart project in 2017. Lastly a new Intpart project has been applied for in 2019 with the present partners in addition to Beijing University of Science and Technology and University of Tokyo.

Common book chapter:New trends in coal conversion. Updated curriculum in TMT4306 Metal production 5 common project was applied; one - not been answered yet, one EU project was awarded, Mintek is participating in one KPN project, NTNU and SINTEF. 2 projects was rejected. Common conferences and seminars: Infacon2018 (South Africa), Kick off seminar at Mintek ( SA 2018), Kick off seminar North West University (SA 2018), Carbon seminar (Norway 2017), Manganese seminar (Norway, 2018), Norway-South Africa student seminar (Norway, 2017)), Furnace Tapping (SA, 2018) Chrome Colloquium (South Africa 2017), and the Controlled Tapping seminar (Norway 2017). The INTPART project willl be closely linked to the "SFI -Metal production". There is some clusters in the world that excels when it comes to ferroalloy production, and Norway and South Africa is two of the prominent production and research-environments. There is however a lack of cooperation today between these communities, though there has been some minor actions and personal collaborations. The main part of the project will be exchange of personel both from Norway to South Africa, and from South Africa to Norway. In addition to an increased collaboration, the project will also focus on common research and common developement of educational materials during the stays. This project will enhance the collaboration between the institutions and exeed the collaboration on a personal level. The project will hence include minimum 2 workshops/seminars each year to include a larger part of the institutions. The technical content of the project will be focused in two directions; first, metal producing reactions and next, use of carbon materials in metal production. The main partners will be NTNU and SINTEF in Norway and North- West University and Mintek in South Africa.
