Arctic Frontiers PhD Workshop

The Arctic Frontiers PhD Workshop (AF PhD WS) is a network project for PhD candidates and early career scientists. The workshop is connected to the ARCTOS research network (http://arctos.uit.no) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the Arctic Frontiers conference. AF PhD WS is a multidisciplinary workshop including political sciences, art, outreach, social sciences, Arctic settlement, business, climate, and marine ecosystems. AF PhD WS targets PhD candidates and early career scientists in need for developing an Arctic network. The workshop contains the following elements: - Participants present a poster or oral presentation at the Arctic Frontiers conference - 10-15 lectures covering political sciences, social sciences, marine ecology, climate, art, business and Arctic local society, as well as writing research proposals - Visiting museums, galleries, companies and concerts - Drafting a research proposal to the ARCTOS European research council in group work followed by an oral presentation of the resulting project proposal - Creating a network and cooperation by bringing together young researchers from Russia, Europe and North-America, who attend the conference and meet politicians, business people, and experienced scientists - Research dissemination and documentation through e.g. blog writing and video making The combination of climate change, globalization and circumpolar problems connected to e.g. oil and gas development, pollution, public health, reduced biodiversity, and the loss of habitats, is an enormous challenge. The idea behind the AF PhD WS is the synergy created by international networks, interdisciplinary cooperation and social dialogue. This way PhD candidates and early career scientists will stand stronger with gained knowledge about Arctic conditions. AF PhD WS is an important arena for building networks, cultural exchange and cooperation.

Arctic Frontiers PhD WS (tidligere Young Scientist Forum) er et nettverksprosjekt for PhD studenter og yngre forskere knyttet til forskernettverket ARCTOS ved UiT Norges Arktiske Universitet og konferansen Arctic Frontiers. I sin nye form, fra 2017, er AF PhD WS en tverrfaglig workshop knyttet til Arctic Frontiers Young (www.arcticfrontiers.com/2016-conference/young). ARCTOS forskerskolen har ansvaret for AF PhD WS som er en flerfaglig WS som omfatter politisk vitenskap, kunst, formidling, samfunnsfag, arktisk bosetning, næringsliv, klima, og marine økosystemer. AF PhD WS retter seg mot PhD studenter og yngre forskere som har behov for å utvikle et arktisk nettverk. Workshopen inneholder følgende elementer: - Deltakere presenterer en poster eller et foredrag på Arctic Frontiers konferansen - 10-15 forelesninger som dekker områdene politisk vitenskap, samfunnsvitenskap, marin økologi, klima, kunst, næringsliv og arktiske lokalsamfunn, samt prosjektsøknadsskriving - Besøk på museer, galerier, bedrifter og konserter - Utarbeiding av en forskingssøknad til ARCTOS Europeiske forskningsråd i gruppearbeid og eksamen i form av muntlig presentasjon av det resulterende forskningsprosjektet - Nettverksbygging og samarbeid via å samle unge forskere fra Russland, Europa og Nord-Amerika for å følge konferansen og for å møte politikere, forretningsfolk og erfarne forskere - Forskningsformidling og dokumentasjon med hjelp av bloggskriving og laging av et video Kombinasjonen av klima endringer, globalisering og sirkumpolare problemer knyttet til f.eks. olje og gassutvikling, forurensning, folkehelse, redusert biodiversitet, og tap av habitater, er en enorm utfordring å håndtere. Ideen bak AF PhD WS er den synergien som skapes ved internasjonale nettverk, tverrfaglig amarbeid og samfunnsdialog. PhD-studentene og yngre forskerne vil på den måten stå sterkere med ny kunnskap om Arktiske forhold. AF PhD WS er en viktig arena for nettverksbygging, kulturell utveksling og samarbeid.
