The maritime cargo fleet consist of 90.000 vessels worldwide and carry 90% of total world trade. The fleet's total fuel consumption is 370 million ton/year resulting in 3% of total CO2 emissions and 20 million tons SOx globally. The world society is fastening the grip on the shipping industry emissions control by rapidly increasing the regulation scheme with stricter limits and mandatory reporting. From 2018 new international regulations, IMO MRV (International Maritime Organization Monitoring, Reporting and Verification) applies to ships larger than 5000 gross tons. The new regulations require collection of consumption data for each type of fuel in use, as well as other relevant operational data reporting. These regulations require equipment to be installed in both new builds and existing ships and the technology available today is not optimal for the customers due to limited measurements and high CAPEX and OPEX. The total market for the technology is in excess of 36 billion NOK of which 800MNOK is for installation in new built ships over the next years. Reporting will be required from all ships and technology available is not optimal. Ship owners request reliable measurement system covering regulatory reporting, but also functionality specifically aiming at fuel reduction for existing ships, as fuel typically accounts for 50% of the ship's OPEX. XSENS disruptive measurement technology is a non-invasive technology that allows for measurement and imaging of flow rate and fluid properties at the fuel pipe cross section. Such real-time qualitative fuel assessment and accurate flow measurement has never been available as a non-invasive instrument which is beneficial for retrofit installation but also reduces the complex installation on new builds. Implementing XSENS fuel meter will help reducing fuel consumption for large ships and in turn reduce CO2 and SOx emissions.
