The increased awareness of associated risks due to radiation exposure has brought forward the need for accurate radiation monitoring for exposed personnel and, in some cases, for the general public. The trend can be found in many fields. For example, nuclear medicine (e.g. cancer therapy), aviation (flight crews, pilots and frequent flyers), environmental (disaster sites or nuclear waste sites) and more. In recent years, the market for radiation monitoring has increased dramatically. As a result, the need for a compact and easy-to-use instrument is on a rise. This project aims at transferring research results from a Research and Development Project to commercialisation in order to fulfil the current market needs. In collaboration with the Center for Medical Radiation Physics (CMRP) at University of Wollongong Australia, SINTEF has developed a silicon micro-dosimeter capable of measuring radiation dose from a mixed radiation field including X-rays, gamma rays, charged particles and neutrons, on a cellular level. This project will bring forth the sensor technology onto manufacture level, while the associated hardware and software will be developed to deliver a highly compact, portable and wireless radiation monitoring system that can interface with all modern handheld devices. The first completed functional prototypes will be fabricated and assembled, and finally be tested by potential customers and user in the expected operating conditions. Collaborators will provide feedback on the desired features of the final prototypes. A thorough plan for a "go-to-market" strategy will be formulated through choice of the correct business model and the identification of the most profitable market. Early-stage investment will be sought by developing a financial model with a realistic revenue plan.
