Alginor`s Ocean Refining Total utilizing Application (AORTA)

Alternative title: Alginors teknologi for totalutnyttelse av biomarine råstoff (AORTA)

Awarded: NOK 4.5 mill.

By 2050 it is estimated that food production should increase by 70% to keep up with population growth and economic growth. Only 2% of the food today comes directly from the sea. This provides good conditions for new and sustainable value creation. Seaweeds are among the largest untapped biomass in the world and Norway has clear comparative advantages with 60 million tonnes along the Norwegian coastline. However, in order to exploit these resources efficiently it is necessary with a technology that utilises the entire biomass and ensures commercial utilisation of the most valuable components - a biorefinery. Through the «AORTA» technology (Alginor's Ocean Refining Total utilizing Application), Alginor ASA plans to establish the first biorefinery in Norway that will focus on total utilisation (i.e. up to 100 % use of the biomass dry material) and resource-efficient processing of seaweeds to unique and well-defined products. The AORTA innovation will contribute to 1) Effective resource management through sustainable production of products that will meet global needs in the food- and feed industry, 2) Environmentally friendly production processes that will contribute to zero emissions, and 3) Use of renewable energy for a blue circular economy. Total utilisation of biomarine raw materials can easily be achieved by completely and solely drying the entire biomass. However, a bioeconomic value creation should be achieved through sustainable and profitable processing, manufacturing and effective utilisation of the raw material. In this project, Alginor has separated, isolated and refined all components in the raw material to pure, unique and formula-specific products of highest quality. The Product Portfolio will be in powder-form to meet the highest quality- and market requirements from customers. A criterion for success is that the results of this research can be used industrially and patented. At the end of the project, Alginor has developed a unique process for pre-treatment of the raw material. The prototypes have been optimized continuously during testing and now reflect a pre-treatment technique that stabilizes the raw material during harvesting and thus enables long-term storage of raw materials without affecting product quality. Equally important, the pre-treatment technique enables a further extraction process that does not require the use of toxic chemicals, which in turn provides the basis for the extraction of all the raw material components. This reflects Alginor's green profile and focused on environmentally friendly solutions. Alginor's innovative pre-treatment technique facilitates the extraction of pure and formal-specific products from the raw material. The process for extracting the project's defined products has been carried out with high purity and theoretical maximum product yield. Now awaits a major piloting and verification of all the processes in one and the same process line. Alginor's green approach enables greater product yields, higher revenue, better cost coverage and more revenue per raw material unit. A natural side effect of this technology is less emissions due to a larger product yield. This green approach to increased resource utilization and value creation is very attractive to our customers. Equally important to customers is traceability. All the products that Alginor ASA will deliver in the future will have full traceability as we control the entire value chain, from harvesting raw materials to the production of finished products. Alginor actively participates in relevant conferences and fairs both nationally and internationally. We market our products in larger arenas and have acquired a number of important contacts on the customer side. We are in direct contact and have signed letter of intent with a number of market-leading players in particular food and pharmaceuticals. At the same time, conferences and fairs provide the opportunity to discover and become acquainted with smaller (and perhaps more unknown) research networks that may contribute with unique approaches and inputs to Alginor's research questions. This has already proved to be a big success!
