InvertaPro Assessing the economic viability of insect-based animal feed production in the Nordics (Norway)

Alternative title: InvertaPro oversikt over økonomisklønnsomhet ved storskala Insekt-basert dyrfôr produksjon i Norden (Norge)

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

InvertaPro will produce high quality insect-based animal feed for the aquaculture industry (fish feed). The main proponent of production will be based upon up-cycling locally available suitable organic waste streams and and utilising them as an insect food substrate. By viewing what is traditionally viewed as waste as a resource InvertaPro will root itself in a circular "closing the loop" approach to animal feed producition. The economic case for this novel approach is based on the rising demand price of comparative animal feed substitutes. Based on the current and project animal feed prices insectmeal production will be a viable competitor, in InvertaPros case we will compete directly both in terms of protein content and nutritional profile with fishmeal. The project is based in the west coast of Norway, where we can utilise both organic resource potential from the districts as well as the major city (Bergen). Through co-operation with varied institutional, private actors including research clusters and industrial waste management companies we believe we can bring Norwegian competency within insect-based animal feed production to an international level. The project will have two overarching objectives. The primary objective will be mapping and quantifying of the total available bio-organic waste streams approved as animal feed under EU law at our two focus locations (Bergen and Voss). Results from this activity will be a good indicator for determining the scale and scope of a commercial insectmeal plant in Bergen. Testing and analysing the aforementioned substrates at our pilot facility will be the second main objective. The focus will be developing and optimising a feed substrate based on locally available resources. Invertapros processed insectmeal will then be analysed; fat, protein, amino acids profile.
