Project Period:

2017 - 2019

Location:

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is in the process of completing a new product standard for high resolution depth data called S-102. High resolution data in grid format offers enormous opportunities and is in demand by many maritime user groups. For several years, there has been a desire to test such data in conjunction with other data sources, in real time operational user environments. A major limitation has been the distribution of data and installation in a system for the end-users to access. This project aimed to speed up the progress in testing the data. We focused on developing an S-102 Demonstrator, together with new S-102 data sets, to visualise the seabed and surroundings and then evaluate the new possibilities and values ??provided. The data was generated from selected areas and tested in operational use in close collaboration with selected users within a reference group. Several prototypes have been created based on feedback and input from the projects reference group. The Reference Group consisted of the Norwegian Coastal Administration, the Royal Norwegian Navy, PRIMAR and the Norwegian Mapping Authority Hydrographic Service. Kongsberg Digital have been responsible for the development of the S-102 Demonstrator, while Electronic Chart Center (ECC) have been responsible for the project and research on data handling, quality assurance and distribution of the S-102 data. In addition, ECC have also participated in the IHO's S-102 working group, which prepares the new S-102 product standard. ECC have provided updates to the product specification, based on findings from this project, some of which have already been accepted and initiated in the new standard. These findings were made possible from test results of the S-102 data production, in close dialogue with the Mapping Authority, allowing for a full understanding of what works and what doesn?t work in the Demonstrator, alongside our Project Partners Kongsberg Digital. During the project, five operational tests were carried out together with representatives from the Reference Group. The summary reports with findings and inputs have been prepared and published on the projects public website. There has been a steady increase in interest, nationally and internationally, for both the research and the results we have achieved during the project. We were also invited to present our findings at several conferences during the project period. Two articles regarding the project have been published - the first in "Necesse", Vol3 2018, a journal from the Naval War School - the other in "Posisjon", no. 4- 2018, a magazine for the association GeoForum. Feedback on development in the project has been extremely positive, both internally and also outside the project group. In our opinion, the project has contributed significantly to the evaluation of this new data type and the basis for future navigation. In addition, the project has identified new opportunities and applications for bathymetric depth data that will benefit the community. The project has demonstrated the importance of collecting, producing and making available high-resolution in-depth data nationally and internationally. All the results of the work carried out during the project has been published on the projects public website - https://s102.no

S-102 data vil inneholde mye mer detaljerte data over havbunnen enn hva tilfellet er for dagens produkter for navigasjon.
