I plan to conduct complementing electrical resistivity tomography and ground-penetrating radar surveys in order to constrain and verify a model of the subsurface temperature conditions within central Spitsbergen. The modelling of the subsurface temperature conditions forms the backbone of my MSc thesis. The fieldwork involves a spring and summer campaign, and utilises equipment already available at UNIS. A greater understanding of the subsurface temperature conditions is vital to quantifying both Svalbard's geothermal and onshore gas hydrate potential.
