The Tenth Anniversary ('Jubileum') of the Arne Naess Symposium on Global Justice and the Environment

Alternative title: Arne Næss Chair, Arne Næss Symposium

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

Our application concerns the financial support for dissemination of the Arne Næss Symposium "Imagining Ecomodernity" on 15 September in the Gamle Festsal at the University of Oslo. The stipend will cover the costs of making a TV program based on the Symposium: a joint collaboration between Kunnskapskanaalen NRK2 and Unimedia. The program has a uniquely broad public outreach (in 2015 it was watched by ca. 130.000 spectators); it is also widely available on the UiOs and NRK2's net pages.

Arne Næss Chair and Symposium on Global Justice and the Environment is designed to critically continue and develop the intellectual legacy of Arne Naess and the Norwegian tradition of sustainability and environmentalism. Its focus is on Norwegian and international scholars who promote cutting edge insights into research on development and the environment and who explore burning issues related to the environmental crisis, social and environmental responsibility, social justice, climate challenge, as well as environmental philosophy and ethics. The 2017 Symposium is a celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Arne Naess Project. In the last ten years the Symposium has been a "visiting card" for the University of Oslo in promoting research on global justice, peace and the environment. The Symposium is usually transmitted by NRK2 (Kunnskapskanalen)and has a broad media coverage in the national press. The theme of the 2017 Arne Næss Symposium is "Doing the Impossible". Its aim is to explore innovative - and seemingly impossible - environmental and developmental projects that take off in spite of the odds and create a blueprint for a sustainable thought and action. The Symposium will invite innovative Norwegian and international thinkers to brainstorm rethinking environmental philosophy and sustainability by bringing it closer to concrete initiatives on the ground.
