Jellyfish Research in Svalbard (JESS)-Workshop

Awarded: NOK 0.23 mill.

Gelatinous zooplankton, more commonly jellyfish, has attracted attention during the last decade around the world, mainly as a result of their physiological attributes that allow them to better exploit the changing environmental conditions than many other zooplankton groups. Despite the increased attention, the pivotal role in marine communities, the associated negative socio-economic impacts and several actors conducting regular plankton research and surveys in Svalbard region, they remain neglected in most plankton studies and monitoring programs. Consequently, their diversity and ecological role are grossly oversimplified and misunderstood, leading to biased views of ecosystem functioning. Jellyfish Research in Svalbard workshop invites plankton and jellyfish researchers together aiming to improve coordination and international collaborative efforts on jellyfish research in Svalbard. Importantly, the workshop will facilitate the spread of improved sampling protocol and data management for the coming years and decades to best monitor climate change impacts on plankton communities as a whole. Emphasis will also evolve around the current status of jellyfish research and future possibilities of large projects and applications.
