Diversification for Resilient and Secure IoT-services

Alternative title: Diversifisere for å skape Robuste, Motstandsdyktige og Sikre IoT-tjenester

Awarded: NOK 0.60 mill.

The digitalized society will have enormous potential in terms of economical growth and improved quality of life. However, evidence show that it can have pernicious effect on security, privacy and safety for both individuals and the society as a whole. For example, if a system can break into one "keyless" car, it allows to steal any car that uses the same "keyless" system [1]. In nature, diversity has been a key mechanism for resilience for all forms of life, by enabling them to adapt to changes in the environmental conditions and evolve immunity to perturbations. The vision of the DiversIoT project (funded by the Norwegian Research council under the IKTPLUSS programme) is to make the IoT ecosystems resilient and trustworthy by diversifying IoT service implementations, enabling companies, public authorities and people to exploit and use IoT-based services, with low risk for privacy and security breaches and significantly reduced impact in case of cyber attack infringes. The project includes the following three partners: SINTEF will lead the project and bring expertice in IoT systems in general and in particular on building tools to specify, validate and derive IoT-Services. SINTEF will bring ThingML toolbench (www.ThingML.org)as a baseline, the most recent version is developed as part of the EU HEADS project. UiO brings expertice on security and privacy mechanisms for IoT and are leading the IoTSec researcy community (http://cwi.unik.no/wiki/IoTSec:Home). DiversIoT will formalise a coupling to IoTSec to build a strong community around the conducted research. TellU brings expertice on IoT in general and in particular they bring the TellUCloud IoT platform that will be applied for validation of DiversIoT concepts, methods and tools. They also bring key industrial partners to the DiversIoT reference group that will provide inputs in terms of requirements and case studiesas well as feedback of the project results.

NOTE: Due to limited resources in 2018 (100,000 NOK, or about 2 weeks of work), it is expected that SINTEF, as the Principal Investigator for DiversIoT, will conduct most of the work in 2018.
