Bilateral collaboration between Akvaplan-niva and Toyo University

Awarded: NOK 26,543

The objective of the visit is to evaluate the possibilities for establishing a long-term collaboration between Dr. Kashiwada research group at Toyo University, Japan, and Akvaplan-niva (APN). The common research goal of both institutions is related to global ecotoxicological issues in connection with climate change with a particular focus on the Arctic region. We will identify research topics at the light of what was discussed during the Japan-Norway Arctic Science and Innovation week (June 2016, Tokyo) where major scientific challenges and new opportunities in polar environments were addressed notably by our colleagues from the ARCTOS network Prof. Paul Wassman, Dr. Ketil Eiane and Dr. Else Hegseth. Akvaplan-niva is the lead Norwegian institution in this application but APN will also represent the ARCTOS Network and Arctos PhD school ( ) to illustrate the potential for multidisciplinary research in collaboration with several Arctic Norwegian institutions. The subgoals of the visit are to: 1. Develop a Norwegian-Japanese bilateral collaboration in the field of ecotoxicology and climate change with particular focus on the Arctic region 2. To identify potential source of funding for joint applications 3. To develop a proposal for a Joint Post doctorate through the NFR research program 4. To develop a project proposal for submission at the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) with deadline on the 24th of April 2017. This travel to Japan will lead to: -Establishing a common dialogue between Dr. Shosaku Kashiwada and Akvaplan-niva researchers (introducing institutions, researchers, expertise, activities) -Identifying common objectives for research in marine pollution, ecotoxicology and climate change in the Arctic -Exploring additional topics of interest such as aquaculture (methodology, new species etc.) with the aquaculture department of APN -Agreeing on joint application development for specific calls for proposals
