KESS-Demonstration of an innovative high-efficiency Kinetic Energy Storage System for sustainable powering of offshore jack-up drilling rigs

Alternative title: KESS-Demonstration of an innovative high-efficiency Kinetic Energy Storage System

Awarded: NOK 1.2 mill.

Project Number:

272123

Project Period:

2017 - 2021

Location:

Siemens Energy AS has together with customer Maersk Drilling AS worked to develop an exciting and modern Flywheel solution, designed especially for offshore use. The solution was and is seen as particularly useful for the drilling segment, where during operation they need to receive or release large amounts of energy within short time intervals, which the Flywheel solution can emit or receive. With its KESS product, WattsUp Power AS has sought to benefit from modern materials and knowledge that have been developed in the Danish wind turbine environment. Unfortunately, as a group, we had problems meeting the deadline for product development. The progress was not within the framework given by the Research Council. Therefore, we as a group agreed with the Research Council to end the project in June 2021.

In agreement with the NRC the project was closed down early due to lack of progress.
