NUTRIBONE- Novel method for optimal utilization of fish bone ingredients

Alternative title: NUTRIBONE- ny metode for optimal utnyttelse av næringsstoff i fiskebein

Awarded: NOK 5.0 mill.

Production of sustainable feed ingredients is required in order to meet the growing demand for proteins in food and feeds. With limited available resources, optimal use of all by-products and resources from the sea is necessary. This means that there should be no discards, and that all nutrients, including those in fish bones, should be efficiently utilized. Fish bones accounts for approximately 20 % of the by-products and contains valuable nutrients such as proteins and minerals. These nutrients remain underutilized today, as there is no present technology that can efficiently extract them. However, researchers at Nofima have found a way to do just that. They have developed a processing technology that make these bone nutrients available in a cost-effective way with minimal use of chemicals. This project aims to verify the industrial applicability of the bone-processing technology for both mineral and proteins in fish bones, and verify the resulting beneficial impact in farmed fish. The ingredients made available by this technology may also be of great interest to other markets, such as the nutraceutical and cosmetics market. By demonstrating how this technology can be used to make valuable ingredients from fish bones, the industry will be encouraged to utilize this resource better.
