Climate Science and Climate Services in Practice

Awarded: NOK 0.13 mill.

The overseas research grant is to support Jana Sillmann to spend up to 4 months at the Pacific Climate Impact Consortium (PCIC) at University of Victoria, BC, Canada. This will enable her to closely collaborate with a climate service provider challenged with similar geographical and climatological conditions as Norway, but working in a different political and socio-economic context in terms of barriers to adaptation and mitigation options. Furthermore, scientists working at PCIC are amongst the leading experts on extreme value analysis and applications in climate services. This will provide an excellent opportunity for Jana Sillmann to build and strengthen her competence in this field, and will enable her to introduce and apply the knowledge in her existing projects and for developing new proposal ideas, strengthening her and her institutes (i.e. CICERO) competences in addressing societal-relevant and demand-driven research questions related to changes in climate extremes. Jana Sillmann leads several projects funded by the Research Council of Norway that are related to scientific and climate service work performed at PCIC ensuring a sound basis for fruitful exchange of knowledge, methods and data. During her visit at PCIC, Jana Sillmann will further connect to other relevant institutes based in Victoria, BC, such as the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions, the University of Victoria and the Climate Research Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada.
