More Efficient and Environmental friendly Road Construction

Alternative title: Mer effektiv og miljøvennlig veibygging

Awarded: NOK 10.0 mill.

Update for 2022 MEERC is now in its final stage. The project is continued through several new initiatives, and it is sometimes difficult to differentiate where MEERC ends from where the new initiatives start. The support from NFR to MEERC is funded through the program Profesjon. The main objective was to strengthen the Civil Engineering education at UiA. During the project, 110 students executed their bachelor’s and master’s projects through MEERC. 6 PhD candidates have been funded (2 through NFR), and this was crucial for UiA to establish a PhD specialisation in Civil Engineering. 35 scientific papers have been published internationally. MEERC has contributed to developing both the bachelor’s and the master’s program within Civil Engineering at UiA, which is indeed a successful outcome of the project. One industrial outcome worth mentioning is the establishment of test road Finsland. This is a full-scale pilot project with 29 test fields for new solutions within road building. It is not funded by MEERC but is a clear spin-off which will remain a source for research and innovation in years to come. Another outcome is that a newly built 4-lane bridge that was hurt during construction, was repaired by the “new” concrete material UHPC. Traditional repair methods were evaluated and found not sufficient. The contractor contacted UiA, as they knew that one of MEERC’s PhD candidates was working with UHPC. The bridge was repaired thanks to this, whereas the alternative solution would have been demolishing and rebuilding. The savings for both investment and the environment were large. The activities throughout MEERC have contributed to giving UiA a sturdy role in the Norwegian road-building industry. This is demonstrated by our central role in the newly established project “Sustainable road”, which was granted 68MNOK from NFR, Innovation Norway and SIVA through the new program “Grønn platform”. UiA is leading two of the five technical work packages. The thematic relation to MEERC is large, and our role is considered a clear spin-off from the efforts invested in MEERC.

MEERC is based on an agreement on innovation, entered by the partners University of Agder (UiA) and Nye Veier AS (NV). (UiA is correspondingly cooperating with Statens Vegvesen (NPRA) on related topics, covering education, evaluation and R&D - including several PhD-projects). The main scope is approached through 4 WPs, focusing on areas identified in 4 workshops including more than 150 industrial stakeholders. The WPs are: Industrialization, Environment, Implementation and Digitalization. MEERC includes researchers from NTNU, SINTEF, NIVA and HiOA. All WPs are required to relate to national/international networks. An organizational chart shows network for each WP present at project start-up. A total of 20-25 scientific papers are expected to be internationally published in journals and conferences, based on MEERC. All 5 PhDs are requested to implement international secondments. MEERC will benefit society through getting better roads at lower cost and environmental impact. Another benefitted group is construction industry, who is included in all processes. Industry will gain competence and competitive advantages on the scoped areas, and awareness on how to benefit from future R&D. UiA is gaining by improving education programmes in Civil and Structural Engineering (C&S-Eng), BSc and MSc level. MEERC will potentially influence 20 subjects (233 ECTS). A table showing 53 intersection points between WPs and subjects indicates potential for massively influencing curricula. MEERC is vital in supporting the permanent establishment of C&S-Eng as focus area under the PhD-program in Technology. This is under implementation, presently comprising 10 PhD-fellows (potential NFR-funded PhDs from MEERC not included). Four of these are industrially funded, two are strategically allocated by board to honour alignment with strategy. Adding to these through NFR-funding in MEERC, will be fundamental.
