Biannual Conference of the Political Ecology Network (POLLEN), Oslo 20-22 June 2018

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

Political ecology is the study of how different interests, forms of power and politics influence and frame access to, use and conceptions of the environment. As a follow-up of the national evaluation of geography in 2011 initiated by the Research Council of Norway (RCN), a national Norwegian network in political ecology was funded by RCN over three years (2012-14). One of the main activities of this network was to organise three workshops/conferences. During the last of these three events held at Litteraturhuset in Oslo in December 2014 it was decided to take the initiative for a European or international network in political ecology. Researchers from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and Oslo and Akershus University College (HiOA) were among the initiators of this new international network together with scholars from the Netherlands (Wageningen University) and England (Lancaster University) in particular. The new network was named POLLEN, and since its inception many new ?nodes? or membership clusters have joined. Member nodes are from not only Europe, but from all parts of the world, including Sub-Saharan Africa, India, and East Asia. This testifies to the rapid increase in the popularity of political ecology as an academic field. One of POLLEN?s main activities is to organize an international conference related to cutting-edge themes in political ecology every two years. The first conference was held in Wageningen in July 2016 and its focus was on the theme of ?Conflict, Capitalism and Contestation?. Hence, this planned conference in Oslo in June 2018 will be the second biannual POLLEN conference. The third will most likely be organised in Lancaster in 2020. POLLEN-18 will take place at the campus of HiOA in Oslo during 20-22 June 2018. The theme of the conference will be ?Political Ecology, Activism, and Alternative Sustainabilities?.
