Oikos 2018

Awarded: NOK 0.23 mill.

In February 2018, the Nordic Oikos conference was held in Trondheim, Norway, consisting of a three-day main conference and several pre-conference thematic symposia. Nordic Society Oikos' mission is "to support scientific research in ecology and related disciplines and to stimulate and enhance communication between stakeholders in ecological research in the Nordic countries and beyond." Every second year, one of the Nordic countries organises a conference to bring together researchers working on ecology and evolutionary biology. The theme of the Nordic OIKOS conference in 2018 was "The importance of ecological science in society", with a solid focus on the need for fundamental ecological science. The aim was to bring together: - the Nordic countries - different ecological disciplines - ecological science and society

The Nordic Oikos conference is a congress that is hosted in a different Nordic country every other year. This conference is a meeting point for all Nordic ecologists and evolutionary biologists. The 2018 conference will be held in Trondheim, Norway, 20. - 22. February, with pre-conference thematic symposia on Monday 19. February. The theme of the Oikos 2018 is "The importance of ecological science in society", with a solid focus on the need for fundamental ecological science. The aim is to bring together 400 ecologists from the different Nordic countries, different ecological disciplines and both ecological science and society. The Oikos 2018 will provide a rigorous scientific forum for communication, discussion and facilitation of new collaborations across disciplines. All needed to generate an improved understanding of essential interactions that will enhance our capacity to actively adapt to change without eroding ecological resilience or making nature more vulnerable. Four keynote lecturers have confirmed their participation and together they cover a large range of ecological research. All of them are scientifically outstanding and are expected to draw great interest from the target group consisting of both scientists, managers and policy makers. All participants will be given a chance to present their work during the oral presentations or poster sessions. In addition to a strong scientific programme the conference will also facilitate more informal communication among participants through social events like the welcome reception and conference dinner. The Oikos congress is inherently a collaborative project both at the National and international level as it will be organized by three institutions in collaboration (Centre for Biodiversity Dynamics at NTNU, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and Nordic Society Oikos) with further contributions from most of the large institutions involved in ecological research and management in Norway.
