EPIGENETIC CONTROL OF EFFECTS INDUCED BY CHRONIC EXPOSURE TO IONISING RADIATIONS

Awarded: NOK 42,000

The experimental strategy will contains two different tasks carried out in parallel by the French and the Norvegian laboratories: 1- Global (molecular and phenotypic markers) and multigenerational (4 generations) analyses of the response to chronic exposure (complete life cycle) to IR. The goal of this task is identify the genes (or gene clusters) specifically involved in the stress response, 2- Identification of epigenetic markers by a global analysis (i) of micro-RNA and (ii) histone modifications. The biological model C. elegans will be use in this project. Due to its biological characteristics (3 days life cycle) this animal allows to carry out chronic exposure over one or several generations, associated with the measurement of effects at molecular, cellular and physiological levels. Interest of the collaboration, complementarity of the teams Teams involved in this project share their scientific expertise in the field of radioecology and the use of the same biological model (C. elegans) to understand the mechanisms of toxicity induced by the chronic irradiation. They are also complementary through the equipment and technical skills (for the measurement of specific molecular markers) provided by in each laboratory. Each partner of the project brings, in particular, their own competence on: 1) IRSN : the management of C. elegans exposure to IR, and molecular markers measurment (micro-RNA, sub-cellular damages), 2) CERAD : the management of C. elegans exposure to IR (irradiation facility complementary to the IRSN), transcriptomic analyses and the measurement of epigenetic markers (histone modifications). Jointly performed research activities and reciprocal exchange of PhD students, will facilitate the exchange of knowlegde and skill and improve scientific quality.
