Enactments of property ownership in times of climate change

Awarded: NOK 0.48 mill.

While property ownership as guarantor of individual autonomy remains a central principle of the modern nation state and a globalized economy, the working hypothesis of this project is that climate change may intensify uncertainties, dilemmas and conflicts related to property ownership. The project will therefore focus on the notions and enactments of ownership that are actualized as we increasingly experience and anticipate material damages related to climate change. Central for the project will be to identify shifts, continuities and differences in how ownership is understood, enacted and negotiated in different contexts, both among local populations and in policy initiatives. By developing ethnographic case studies from particular field sites in Europe and Latin America, the project will open new horizons through a comparative analysis of enactments and dilemmas of ownership across regions of significant scope and variation. The main objectives of the project are: a) Assess current shifts and provide original ethnographic knowledge of dilemmas or contestation of property ownership as we experience (or anticipate) climate change. b) Assuming that property ownership is not a static, self-evident status, the project is methodologically innovative in that it will develop an empirically grounded comparison of different socio-cultural ways of enacting ownership in the face of climate change. c) Add to the understanding and conceptualization of ownership in social scientific theory, and develop the vocabulary of the social sciences and social anthropology with respect to climate change; hence enhancing their contribution and relevance in approaches to climate change. d) Provide input to policy makers about how to address and deal with different dimensions of climate change.
