In the Future farm project, we have developed digital services aimed at the Norwegian dairy farmer. The use of sensors, automatic data-collection methods and data driven insights has been central to the projects work. We have gathered relevant data across the value chain in an ecosystem and used this as a base for creating concepts for digital services. We have focused on generating insight and actionable advice rather than displaying plain information to the farmer. The services we have developed have shown great promise when it comes to improve productivity and aid in the farmers decision making. These are some of the concepts that the project has developed: Concept 1: Silage order. The silage need of the farmers for the upcoming season is calculated, to give the farmer a clear overview of the silage he needs to either produce or buy. The silage order I calculated based on the farmers production quota, livestock, planned use of concentrates as well as knowledge of lactation curves. Concept 2: Optimal harvest time. We have developed a machine learning model for predicting the optimal harvest time. The model leverages several data sources gathered in the project, such as satellite imagery, drone mapping, weather data, soil samples and more. Picking the correct harvest time has a great impact both for the farmers economy, as well as the environmental footprint of the production. Our model has shown a good ability to predict the development of nutrients in the grass, and therefore the optimal harvest time. Concept 3: Grass sample sent with the milk truck. We have piloted a concept where prognosis samples of the grass are sent to the lab with the milk truck servicing the farm. The sample is registered in the Future Farm app, and the results are reported back in the app. This can be used to determine the harvest time, for example in combination with the machine learning model. Concept 4: Silage storage system. Through this function, the farmer gets a complete overview of where the silage is stored, how much of it he has, which group of animals it is intended for, and on which fields and cuts it was produced. Concept 5: A marketplace for silage based on DLT/blockchain technology. We have created a prototype of this marketplace in collaboration with IOTA. Here, the farmer can buy or sell silage on a marketplace where information about quality and production method can be connected to the listed silage in an easy and trustworthy way. Concept 6: Benchmarking. Benchmarking of silage production to compare results when it comes to harvest yield, silage quality and time spent performing different field operations. The farmer can compare himself across these dimensions against previous production years on his own farm, or against other farmers in the area. Through this comparison, the farmer will get insight into which areas he might be able to improve. We have demonstrated each concept, and the synergies between them, by developing the Future Farm app. This enables us to do realistic testing of user experiences to evaluate the value of the concepts we have created. We have communicated the projects work and results on several occasions. For example, on a reportage on the national evening news (NRK Dagsrevyen). In 2020 we have been able to present the project in the British parliament, the Norwegian governments digitalization committee and on the conference Oslo Life Science. We would like to highlight the good cooperation and commitment we have in the project. We have chosen to work together on almost every concept, and we have no doubt that Future Farm will act as an enabler for collaboration between the project partners in the future.
