Markedsdrevet integrert produkt- og produksjonsutvikling for rask internasjonal vekst

Alternative title: Market driven integrated product- and production development for rapid international growth

Awarded: NOK 16.0 mill.

How to keep the customers close when they are increasingly numerous and further away? How to double the production while improving efficciency by 30%? Orkel has tripled its sales over the past five years on sales of agricultural machinery to the whole world, with China as its main market. The main products are Compactors, stationary round balers that pack and preserve the value of animal feed as well as a number of other materials, such as by-products from sugar and beer production, as well as manure, sawdust, plastic and household waste. Orkel continues to experience increasing demand worldwide and sees more opportunities for rapid growth and expansion in Orkland, Trøndelag. Duun Industrier develops and manufactures machinery for agriculture, firewood production and road maintenance during winter. Duun experience growth in both the home and export markets. Duun is focusing on high-tech production and the development of new products that increase productivity for the end users. Duun see significant opportunities for increased growth in several export markets for the company's firewood machines, snow removal equipment, mulchers and manure pumps. The customer base increases both in number and in distance, as does competition. The Corona pandemic makes communication more difficult as there is less opportunity to travel. At the same time, there is significant potential for innovation, both in digital customer support and contact, as well as the development of product-service combinations. In this demanding landscape, the WRAPID project promotes and ensures the companies' growth, internationalization and competitiveness. We take advantage of new opportunities for digitization, including the use of big data, the internet of things, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. Among other things, we have introduced online customer support and training using smart glasses to help customers get started with the equipment. An example is a customer in Taiwan who used the smart glasses, while a technician in Switzerland and a translator / technician in China collaborated in real time and had the Compactor installed and commissioned. In addition, we have developed a system for remote diagnosis on the machines. The system was sold in 50 copies even before it was finished. Together, the solutions for remote interaction with customers and machines can be a big advantage - a small company that is digitally closer to the customers than the giants that have offices in each country. The solutions are in use, and we continue to work on escalating the use and further development of the systems. Another result that goes in the same direction is the development of product configurators that help external sales personnel and keep them up to date, with less need for physical collections. In connection with the newly built factory hall at Orkel and expansion at Duun, the project has focused on organizing efficient material flow. Orkel sees results of about 30% savings in production time from 2019 to 2021. During the same two years the company is managing a production increase of more than 80%. The project has developed digital tools, in the form of a website on the mobile phone and tablets, for efficient contact and problem solving between the departments at the factories, as well as suppliers. In this area we are among the best in Norway. Analysis of statistics on the use of the tools shows us which parts of product and production are most useful to improve. This is very useful decision support. Together with methodologies for modularized production and product development, it enables companies to better develop products and services that meet real needs, as well as effectively put them into production. Earlier in the project, we have conducted pilot testing in the field and full scale of the IoT solution Orkel Precision at NMBU, Ås. 300 round bales of grass were pressed, while the baler and the grass were measured and monitored over the internet. Dry matter, protein content, etc. as well as location and time was automatically registered for each bale and stored in the cloud. Each bale was marked with an NFC tag for reading with a mobile phone. Remote monitoring of the press via app and web portal, as well as tracking of each round ball was tested successfully. This is the only system in the world of its kind. We have worked on combining digital and interpersonal sources of customer understanding, in a systematic approach to gain good customer and user insight. This is very important and something we perhaps especially in Norway need to get better at, as pointed out in this year's Innovation Agreement by Håkon Haugli, CEO of Innovation Norway.
