Popular science presentation - ALLOC New and innovative wall and flooring products involve high-tech development of products with increased functionality, a greener profile and cost-effective processes. These have been some of the main elements in the development of laminate products in the ALLOC project. We had 4 main activities in the project which include the development of; i) bio-based resin that could replace fossil-based phenol formaldehyde, ii) recycled paper for impregnation and use in laminate, iii) new mechanically-stable biocomposite materials based on biopolymers, wood fiber and industrial side streams and iv) innovative motion sensors. All these components will be implemented in the new SPL process developed by Alloc AS. Through close collaboration between the project partners, the ALLOC project has achieved several of these goals. RISE PFI has developed a bio-based resin that could potentially replace phenol formaldehyde resin. This has been tested with recycled paper developed by Ranheim Paper & Board and for use in laminate products from Alloc. The project partners RISE PFI, NTNU, Norske Skog Saugbrugs and Alloc have assessed several side streams from flooring production, and we have demonstrated that selected side streams can be used in new biocomposite materials for injection moulding, which is expected to have a large positive effect on the development of a green and sustainable product. In collaboration with Åbo Akademi University, the ALLOC project has also developed a motion sensor that can eventually be implemented in new flooring products. The sensor has been tested on a lab scale with good results. The next step will be to conduct a feasibility study regarding industrial production and implementation. The potential for the application of project results is significant both for Alloc AS and partners. The project has generated several results that may be patentable, and this will be investigated as part of Alloc AS's commercialization strategy. Summary New and innovative wall and flooring products involve high-tech development of products with increased functionality, a greener profile and cost-effective processes. These have been some of the main elements in the development of laminate products in the ALLOC project. The project has achieved several milestones, such as: i) development of a bio-based resin that can potentially replace phenol formaldehyde resin, ii) development and testing of recycled paper for use in laminate products, iii) new biocomposite materials for extrusion and injection molding and iv) motion sensor that will eventually be implemented in new flooring products. The potential for the application of project results is significant for both Alloc AS and partners, and this has led to new project initiatives for implementation in commercial products.
