Luftputekatamaran (SES) mannskapstransportfartøy (CTV) for offshore olje og gass markedet

Alternative title: Air-cushion catamaran (SES) crew transfer vessel (CTV) for the offshore oil and gas market

Awarded: NOK 5.0 mill.

Project Number:

282404

Project Period:

2018 - 2019

The aim of the research project has been to develop a safer and less expensive crew transfer system for the offshore oil and gas market that can replace regular helicopter transport. A Surface Effect Ship (SES) consists of a catamaran hull where the space enclosed by the side hulls are closed with flexible rubber skirts fore and aft. The enclosed volume this forms is called the air cushion. Centrifugal fans blow air into the air cushion and lift the vessel partially out of the sea. This provides a potential for significantly higher speeds as well as improved seakeeping performance compared to conventional vessels. In addition, the comfort of crews and passengers is improved. Active control of the air cushion pressure may reduce the vessel motions even further. The transfer of personnel from ships to offshore installations are usually done by a gangway system, lift system or over the bow using a friction fender. Enlistment and transfer of personnel to offshore installations in high waves, strong winds and currents is a critical operation for these vessels. For safe manoeuvring, entry and transfer of personnel in such conditions, one has to be able to balance large forces. By splitting the air-cushion in four compartments and active control the air pressure in the compartments separately and combine the effect with the thrust from dedicated DP thrusters and water-jet propulsion we have developed a motion control system, which allow control of motion in all six degrees of freedom. The system are validated by model tests and CFD simulations, which show that the system allows for personnel transfer to and from offshore installations in higher seas than conventional vessels. The model tests show that the vessel motions may be reduced by up to 80% and an availability analysis show that the vessel has an availability of personnel transfer to an entrance deck situated 25 meter above the sea of above 80% in the North Sea. This is not considerable lower than the availability of helicopter transport, which normally has an availability above 90%. The North Sea is a rough sea area. In less rough sea areas or at transfer to lower positioned entrance decks the availability may be as good as for helicopter transport. in relation to personnel safety it is assumed that the vessel concept, based on public available statistics, may be considerable improved. In the study our internal analysis tools, SESRes and SESSim are updated to take into account a split cushion. SESRes and SESSim are respectively tools for vessel resistance calculation and for simulating the effect of the control system on motion damping. The study has included work from master students. This work has resulted in two project thesis and three master thesis. Beside this, six conference articles are published by now. The validation of the vessel in speed shows that the system allows also here for considerable motion reduction and by that increased personnel comfort. Unfortunately, the split cushion contributes to a resistance increase and speed loss as it is designed by now. The reason for this is that the longitudinal split of the air cushion contributes with a considerable additional drag. However, initial CFD simulations show that without the longitudinal split, but keeping the transverse split and by efficient control of the pressure in the air cushion we may even increase the vessel speed somewhat compared to a SES vessel without a split cushion. Umoe Mandal has therefore applied the Research Council for and has been granted a new research project where research on a retractable split cushion is included as an activity. The research project is completed with the development of a sufficiently light and efficient composite telescopic personnel transfer system, a machinery study where zero- and low-emission propulsion systems are considered and a hull structure study where we have considered alternative materials and manufacturing methods. A final vessel arrangement and vessel specification is also prepared.
