NORSelast AF - Biocidfri polyuretan med anti-groe egenskaper

Alternative title: NORSelast AF - Biocidal free poyurethane with antifouling properties

Awarded: NOK 12.3 mill.

The project will develop the first polyurethane material in the world with AntiFouling properties lasting for at least 10 years. The material NORSelast® AF is to be made by molding substances with AntiFouling properties in the material while retaining or improving the good mechanical properties of the NORSelast® material. The substances do not adversely affect the environment, but prevent the formation of biofilm. The aim of the project is to create an environmentally friendly plastic material, which seaweed and tare will not grow on. Today's coating systems for minimization of marine pollution, contain toxic chemicals (biocides) that kill the bacteria that adhere to the surface. This also has a negative impact on the environment, so authorities are currently working to limit the use of such substances. The project group consists of Strukturplast as project manager and initiator, Inhibio as an expert on antibacterial substances that counteract growth, Norner and Aquateam COWI as test institute and R & D partners and Selstad as finalist and test partner. The project will carry out microbiological analyzes, chemical analyzes, surface analyzes and mechanical analyzes. The project will test chemical environmentally friendly substances, surface structure and production processes to create the world leading material NORSelast® AF. NORSelast® is one of the world's strongest elastic materials, and it is mainly used where long life, high strength and good absorption of destructive energy are desired. The material is an elastomeric polyurethane-based thermoset with polyether bonds that leads to a life span of 50-70 years in tough maritime environments. The material is used in oil and gas, fishing and farming, shipping and boat, renewable aquaculture energy, seismic and defense. The project period is 3 years, with project start in Q1 2018. The budget is 24.600.000 NOK. The fall and winter 2018/19 the project has devoloped test methods for marine fouling and devoloped marine bakterias in lab. The test methodes can quantify the amount of marine fouling on test speciment. The project has tested state of the art substances in relevant environment during the summer 2019. The fall of 2019 has been used to optimize the production process for casting the prototypes. More optimization will be done during the winter of 2019/20. The spring and summer of 2020 will new prototypes be tested in the sea and in lab. In 2020, the project has developed two methods for leakage tests for inhibio substances and biocides. The tests have yielded quantifiable results on leakage rates of polyurethane chemicals. This is important in order to be able to develop mathematical models for fouling rates. We have tested several environmentally friendly substances against fouling. The project has also developed polyurethane with less surface tension which will be tested in the winter of 2020/21. The project also tests laser-treated surfaces. 2021 has been used for testing of new and optimized recipes and substances. Tests have been carried out in Norway and Malta, where several of the theories have given promising results. In the autumn of 2021, the first full-scale prototype was made, which is now being tested by a pilot customer until summer of 2022. Q1 2022 has been used for compiling and summarizing project results, process optimazation and reports. Tests that have been carried out in the sea and in the lab have also been completed. The project results show promising technology on the defined project goal.
