Biofacies studies in the Botneheia Formation on Eastern Svalbard

Awarded: NOK 13,735

I apply for the Artic Field Grant as a support to do field work for my master thesis. The project is a combination of sedimentology and paleontology studies on the Botneheia Formation in the Triassic age on Svalbard. There will be focus on the biofacies studies that occur in this formation in the Eastern part of Svalbard. Botneheia Fm is very organic rich, but alternate between beds deposited in anoxic environment with oxic beds showing abundant bioturbation. In this study there will be foucus on finding out where in the formation there is anoxic, and where it is oxic conditions. My supervisors for this project are Atle Mørk, professor II at NTNU and Snorre Olaussen at UNIS. The field work is planned to take place between 1st of August ? 31st of August 2018, with possibilities for some small changes. The area planned is the Eastern part of Edgeøya on Svalbard. The area has excellent outcrops of the Botneheia Fm which is necessary in order to be able to study the different biofacies in the formation as good as possible. The fieldwork is important in order to gain data for my master theses and for further scientific work in the Botneheia Fm.
