Strengthening NTNU's participation in Research on European Children and Adults born Preterm

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

The topic of this project is research aiming to improve health, development, and quality of life of children and adults born preterm. NTNU is partner in the EU Horizon 2020 project: "Research on European Children and Adults born Preterm (RECAP Preterm)" and working participant in the international network "Adults born Preterm International Collaboration (APIC)". We aim to strengthen the partner contribution of NTNU in RECAP Preterm and promote professional collaboration beyond the EU project. This includes extended national collaboration and yearly workshops with Haukeland University Hospital/University of Bergen in relation to the EU project and increased professional and economic participation in the APIC network. In 2018, a formal agreement was established between NTNU and Haukeland University hospital as Third party in RECAP Preterm. In the reporting period for 2019, 2 workshops were arranged (October 2018, March 2019), and 3 Skype-meetings (December 2018, May 2019, August 2019). NTNU financed the APIC meeting in connection with European Academy of Paediatric Societies Congress November 2018 (Paris) and took part in APIC meetings in connection with Pediatric Academic Societies April 2019 (Baltimore) and Joint European Neonatal Societies in September 2019 (Maastricht). In 2019, 9 PhD/Post doc applications were submitted in collaboration between NTNU and Haukeland or international partners in RECAP or APIC (Prematurforeningen/Extrastiftelsen, Helse Midt, Helse Vest, Fysiofondet), of which 2 were funded (Helse Vest). In the reporting period for 2020, 1 workshop between NTNU and Haukeland University Hospital was arranged in November 2019, 1 Skype-workshop in March 2020 and 5 Skype-meetings for preparing an RCN application. In 2020, 1 PhD application was submitted (Prematurforeningen/DAM Foundation 2nd round) and 1 application completed for RCN Collaborative Project to meet Societal and Industry-related Challenges ("Born too soon: Health, Adaptation & Physical Participation in Young Life (HAPPY Life); Health promotion for preterm children - a two-sites interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial project with international and EU funded collaboration"). Of these, 1 PhD stipend was granted from the DAM Foundation (NTNU). Furthermore, we were co-operating partner in an application for NORDFORSK ("NORDCAP"), and an EU Horizon 2020 application, Work program: Health, demographic change and wellbeing ("PREPARE Preterm") and supporting partner for 2 ERC applications for Advanced Grant (E. Kajantie, Finland and D. Wolke, UK). None of these were granted, but PREPARE Preterm which was based on the RECAP collaboration and data node was ranked as number 8 out of 60 applications and will be further developed. The current RCN project has contributed to the Norwegian participation. In the reporting period for 2021, NTNU and Haukeland University Hospital took part in 3 digital APIC meetings (October 2020, May 2021, November 2021). Two workshops were arranged between NTNU and Haukeland (digital November 2020, live in Bergen November 2021) and additional 8 digital joint ventures preparing a new RCN application. In 2021, 3 PhD applications were submitted (Prematurforeningen/DAM Foundation, and Central Norway Health Authority), one application for a 3-year 50% research position and one for 2-year project support (Joint Research Committee NTNU/St. Olav). Of these were granted: 1 PhD stipend (Central Norway Health Authority), the 3-year 50% research position (NTNU/St Olav), and 2-year project support (NTNU/St Olav). An application with Principal Investigator from Haukeland University Hospital is in preparation for RCN Collaborative Project to meet Societal and Industry-related Challenges, February 2022. In the international collaboration, we consecutively take part in the preparation of papers for publication.

Research on European Children and Adults born Preterm - RECAP preterm - has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 733280, for 2017-2020. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is partner. NTNU's project leader/partner contact (applicant) is responsible for delivery within several work packages and holds a special task to provide for a third party: Haukeland University Hospital (HUS). The objective for this application is therefore to provide for and increase scientific collaboration with Haukeland University Hospital, and expand participation in Adults born Preterm International Collaboration (APIC). The application includes operating expenses to enable these activities from 2018 to 2020, including workshops with HUS/UiB and hosting one APIC meeting. Funding will bring NTNU's contribution to RECAP preterm above the present project, and allow for increased scientific activities and working relations nationally and internationally. This project will answer to prioritized topics in the BEDREHELSE program: *Mental health, *Transitions in life and vulnerable periods in life, and *Prevention of non-communicable diseases, meeting core strategic priorities by assessing burden of disease, analysis of function and quality of life, risk and resilience, by making use of existing data and prepare future research. The basis for the project moderation is that Covid-19 has delayed essential work in RECAP Preterm, which is therefore prolonged without extra funding until 30.09.2021 (previous end date 31.03.2021). The planned work-shops with Haukeland in Spring- and Autumn-20 are arranged as digital meetings, and APIC-meetings in 2020 are either cancelled (May) or will be held as digital meeting (October). Expenses are therefore reduced in 2020, while there is a need for prolonging the activity and transfer of remaining funds until the end of 2021.
