Gut microbiota and Health. How antibiotics and c-section delivery affectsgut microbiota and potential health effects.

Awarded: NOK 0.12 mill.

The importance of gut microbiota in human health and disease is now fully being acknowledged. The gut microbiota in the western world has been shown to be less diverse than the microbiota in indigenous populations, and cesarean section and antibiotics are two of the most detrimental life style factors known to disrupt the gut microbiota. In a two day conference in Oslo we will have several of the world leading scientist within the field of gut microbiota to give talks on the crucial role of gut microbiota for health, how lifestyle factors may disrupt it and thereby causing long term chronic disease \s not immediately apparent. The conference will reach out to a broad interdisciplinary audience consitsting of representatives from all relevant areas of medicine, including but not restricted to gynecology/obstetrics, pediatrics, microbiology, surgeons, internal medicine and pharmacology. The conference long term aim is that we will be able to reduce antibiotic prescription and limit C-section to the strongly indicated, as then we can stall and prevent further decline in microbioal diversity and this is expected to reduce incidences of a number of chronic illness over a lifetime. It will also be beneficial for antibiotic resistence
