Emerging Leaders 2018 og 2019

Awarded: NOK 0.60 mill.

The Arctic as we know it is going through an irreversible set of changes. People who live and work in the Arctic are experiencing climate changes. Nations are experiencing a change in climate in which they work and cooperate. The gap between global opportunities and challenges in the Arctic is big and vulnerable. Solutions here in the high north demand precaution and modesty. Future operations in the Arctic require efficient cooperation across disciplines, sectors and national borders. Developments in the Arctic depend on brave, safe and sustainable solutions. Arctic solutions are global by origin and specific by character. Decisions in and on the Arctic should be based on historical and social trans-border networks that have brought together a variety of nationalities, cultures, peoples and disciplines for generations. What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic. No, developments in the high north is concurrently affecting the whole world and the entire global society. Our common Arctic gives us a unique opportunity to set the course for a sustainable development and global cooperation across traditional forms of governance. The Arctic is calling out to future generations and emerging leaders among politicians, scientists and business leaders to take the steering lead in the Arctic on Arctic premises. The Emerging Leaders is an important networking arena for young scientists and early professionals at the international and multidisciplinary Arctic Frontiers conference held in Tromsø annually in week 4. The Emerging Leaders program invites socially engaged Norwegian and international candidates under the age of 35 years from different disciplines and sectors to a socially and professionally inspiring study of the of the Arctic in the Arctic environment. The Emerging Leaders program starts up in Bodø, on Wednesday in week 3, with a warm welcome and social program. In the subsequent days of inspiring program, we look into weaknesses and strengths in Arctic security policies, and search and rescue in the high north. Which opportunities and challenges are we up against now that operations in the Arctic are growing in number and size? How can we best prepare ourselves in Lofoten and in the Arctic on an industrial increase in resource exploration, shipping, tourism and an opening of new fishing areas? Already on the second day of the journey we hop on the Hurtigruten coastal cruise ship from Bodø to Lofoten in order to explore the modernization of coastal fisheries, and the development of modern experience-based tourism. How can we contribute to a sustainable management of the ocean when the whole world is crying out loudly for more food from the sea and more energy, while at the same time protecting these prosperous marine areas for leisure and recreation? Are the guidelines governing economic growth in aquaculture based on environmental sustainability? And, did you know that there are traces of people living in Lofoten 6 000 years ago? After two days of nature-based activities and work shop in Lofoten, the Emerging Leaders continue their northbound journey on board the Hurtigruten coastal cruise ship. Upon arrival in Tromsø, the Emerging Leaders are invited to share their perspectives on sustainable development in the Arctic with a distinguished group of VIP guests from embassies, businesses and research institutions. The audience are particularly responsive and attentive to hear what the Emerging Leaders are stressing and what course they are eager to take for sustainable development in the Arctic.
