Minority Names in Oral and Written Contexts in a Multi-Cultural World. - NORNA-symposium 2019 at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences.

Alternative title: Navn på minoritetsspråk i muntlige og skriftlige sammenhenger i en flerkulturell verden

Awarded: NOK 99,999

The Sámi University of Applied Sciences will host the symposium, Minority Names in Oral and Written Contexts in a Multi-Cultural World, in April 2019 in Guovdageaidnu, Norway. The symposium will be the 49th in the series of symposia of the Nordic name research association NORNA. 2019 has been chosen by the United Nations as the International Year of Indigenous Languages, coordinated by UNESCO. As cooperation with the Sámi Parliament of Norway, Sámediggi, this name symposium will be one of the events organized by the Sámi. Hence, the symposium will highlight name issues as a crucial part of indigenous and minority languages. The symposium has as its topic both the oral and written contexts of minority language names, and thus the various presentations may touch on all types of name categories, such as e.g. minority language place names, personal names, as well as administrative and business names. The theme of the presentations will include the various different aspects of how names are used orally and in written and/or official contexts in the various linguistic and cultural environments, and of how minority names function in bi- or multilingual environments. The Scandinavian languages, in addition to the Sámi languages and English will be the working languages of the symposium.

In the Nordic countries, there exists an academic association dedicated to the subject of onomastic or name research known as NORNA. The Sámi University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) will host the 49th NORNA-symposium Minority Names in Oral and Written Contexts in a Multi-Cultural World in April 2019. 2019 has been chosen by the United Nations as the International Year of Indigenous Languages, coordinated by UNESCO. As a cooperation with the Sámi Parliament of Norway, the name symposium will be one of the events organized by the Sámi as part of that year's programme. The symposium has as its topic, both the oral and written contexts of minority language names. Presentations of the symposium may touch on all types of name categories, such as e.g. minority language place names, personal names, administrative names, business, animal and artefact names. The thematic of the presentations will therefore include all the various different aspects of how names are used orally in the various linguistic and cultural environments, and of how minority names function in contact in bi- or multilingual environments; of what rights minority names have in written and/or official contexts; of how such names are used in linguistic and onomastic landscapes; of how minority names are recognized in the Name Acts; of how legal protection functions in practice with respect to minority names and of what kinds of name political conditions and challenges exist with regard to minority languages. The name symposium will last for two working days. As keynote speakers will be invited researchers who are working on minority name related research topics. One of the keynote speakers will be involved in the field of Sámi onomastics while the other will represent another minority language. The papers read at the NORNA congresses and symposia are normally published in the series NORNA-rapporter. The aim of the name symposium is also to publish the papers, as is customary in the NORNA-network.
