The European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Healthcare (ESPMH) - konferanse Oslo 2019

The ESPMH Conference 2019 This year Centre for Medical Ethics (CME) at the University of Oslo turned 30 years. In conjunction with this anniversary CME had the pleasure of organising the 33. annual conference of the European Society of Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care. ESPMH was founded in 1987 by an inter-diciplinary group of scholars (philosophers, physcians, ethicists and others with a keen interest in philosophy of medicine) as a response to the growing need for critical reflection on the role medicine and health care play in society in terms of greater welfare as well as resources spent. This year's conference was entitled 'Philosophy and Ethics at the Edge of Medicine', and took place in Georg Sverdrup's hus (the building that houses the University library) from August 7-10. The conference gathered more than 200 participants from Europe, USA, Asia and Latin America,the highest number of participants ever, something which contributed substantially to the success of the conference. The conference was organised in five plenary sessions (one key note speaker plus one commentator for each session) followed by thematic paralell sessions. Based on feedback from very many participants we are proud to report that the organisation of these sessions as well as their content were very well received.

Konferansen har resultert i forskningssamarbeid med Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA, og med Binghamton University,New York, USA i forbindelse med revisjonen av en ERC Advanced Grant-søknad. I tillegg har SMEs forskningsportefølje i medisinsk filosofi og i klinisk etikk etablert nye samarbeidsrelasjoner med flere forskere som deltok på konferansen.

ESPMH har eksistert i 31 år, og har per i dag 330 medlemmer fra 47 land i og utenfor Europa. Blant medlemmene er noen av de fremste forskerne innen medisinsk etikk og medisinfilosofi i Europa. ESPMH-konferansene arrangeres én gang per år, og samler hvert år om lag 150 forskere. Formålet med de årlige konferansene er å presentere ny og pågående forskning innen feltet, og stimulere til økt samarbeid og forskning. Konferansen vil foregå i Helga Engs hus på Blindern fra 7-10.08, 2019 med konferansemiddag fredag kveld i Eckbo Selskapslokaler. Det vil være tre key-note speakere fra utlandet og en fra Norge. Tentative navn erprofessor Lisa Tessman (Department of Philosophy, Binghampton University, New York), Stephen Tyreman (British School of Osteopathy, London), Sigrid Sterckx (Bioethics Institute, Ghent University, Belgia) og professor Bjørn Hofmann (Universitetet i Oslo/NTNU). ESPMH har siden 1998 hatt et eget tidsskrift, Medicine Health Care and Philosophy, som utgis i samarbeid med Springer forlag. Man tar sikte på å utgi et temanummer, 'Issues at the edge of Medicine', med et utvalg av de beste paperne fra konferansen.
