Partnership on Central Nervous System Malignancies

Malignant tumors of the brain, in particular glioblastoma (GBM) and brain metastases from skin, lung and breast, represent a major unsolved clinical challenge. Our INTPART programme is aimed at establishing an outstanding international research and education initiative within the field of brain cancer, involving 4 academic institutions: 1) The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Bergen, 2) MD-Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (US), 3) Cheeloo Health Science Center, Shandong University, China and 4) Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO) Wuhan, China. Based on prior collaboration, between the institutions, our programme will strengthen existing research activities, as well as build up new research and educational initiatives between the institutions. A central element in the INTPART project is to educate students as well as researchers in international translational research projects and to build up joint research programmes with a translational value for preclinical/clinical studies. Based on the current Covid 19 situation, it has proven difficult to have proper training programs which involves personell exchange between institutions. At present, there are still large travel restrictions both in China and the US related to exchange of students and personell between the institutions. It has therefore been very little to no activity in the project since the Covid epidemic started.

The presented application is aimed at establishing an outstanding international research and education initiative involving 4 academic institutions: 1) The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Bergen, 2) MD-Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (US), 3) Cheeloo Health Science Center, Shandong University, China and 4) Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (WNLO), Wuhan, China. The strategic significance of the presented application is based on already formal agreements and excellent collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Bergen, Shandong University and MD-Anderson Cancer Center. To further extend our collaborative initiatives related to research and education, we have initiated a collaboration with Prof. Qingmin Luo at the Wuhan National Laboratory, who is one of the world leaders in the development of novel technologies related to optical molecular imaging for protein function in vivo (supported by the National Basic Research Programme in China).
