International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology 2019 Meeting, 7-12 July, Oslo, Norway

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

The International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology (ISHPSSB) brings together scholars focusing on the history, philosophy, and social studies of the life sciences, science education and museum studies, as well as researchers in the life sciences. The biennial ISHPSSB summer meetings are known for innovative, trans-disciplinary sessions, and for fostering informal, co-operative exchanges and on-going collaborations. The contributors and attendees include senior and junior academics, students, and members of the public. The number of participants has been on the rise, reaching more than 700 in Montreal 2015, while Sao Paolo in 2017 attracted 450 attendees. The Oslo 2019 meeting is a joint effort of The Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology and the University of Oslo Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis, the Institute of Health and Society, the TIK Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture, and the Museum of Cultural History - Department of Ethnography, Numismatics, Classical Archaeology and University History. Two members of the committee come from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at NTNU and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Bergen. This composition advances national collaboration and reflects ISHPSSB's international scope and commitment in working across disciplinary boundaries. The academic focus in the history and philosophy of the life sciences will be supplemented by the strengths of the organising institutions in social studies of science, biomedical sciences, and museum studies. The issues addressed in the conference are at the forefront of research in the life sciences, the humanities and social sciences, and include socially relevant discussions on health, medicine, genetics, ecology and environmental studies, human diversity and biodiversity, ethics, as well as on the critical appreciation of science as a socially and culturally embedded activity.
