53rd Congress of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE), 5.-9. august 2019

Awarded: NOK 0.25 mill.

The 53rd World Congress of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) was held in Bergen 5th-9th August 2019. ISAE is the world-leading organization for researchers in the behaviour and welfare of animals kept by humans, especially domestic animals and companion animals. The members are mainly ethologists (behavioural biologists) and veterinarians, and these help to improve the conditions for the animals with knowledge dissemination and with input to the authorities that draw up animal welfare laws and regulations. The congress gathered 416 participants, including the leading scientists and professionals from around the world on the behaviour and welfare of farm and companion animals. It is 20 years since the last ISAE congress was held in Norway, so Norwegian professionals and the media had a unique opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of where the research stands today. Participants were able to hear and see 315 lectures and posters with the latest research results. This year's theme was "Animal lives worth living". The theme shows the vision the researchers have for the animal husbandry. The presented results provide new knowledge so that the animals can be assured a better environment, a breeding that provides more robust animals, better husbandry routines and better relationships between animals and their caretakers. Animal welfare challenges exist in all species of farm animals and companion animals. There are not always easy solutions. Therefore, the problems must be solved with better insight into the basic aspects of the mechanisms behind the animals' behaviour and needs, which many speakers contributed to. Applied ethology also includes animal-assisted interventions, how animals can contribute to therapy or activity for people with different types of problems, such as within Green Care. The congressional themes attract many young scientists, so that approx. 30 % of the participants were doctoral students. Over half of the participants were women. The congress was organized by the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) with several Norwegian institutions as partners (Norwegian Veterinary Institute, Institute of Marine Research, Animalia (Norwegian Meat and Poultry Research Centre) and NIBIO (Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research)). Professor Bjarne O. Braastad was chair of the Organizing Committee, while Professor Ruth C. Newberry chaired the Scientific Committee, both from the Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences, Faculty of Biosciences, at NMBU in Ås.
