Music Teacher Education for the Future

Alternative title: Musikklærarutdanning for framtida

Awarded: NOK 12.0 mill.

In the FUTURED project researchers have critically explored the music subject within the Norwegian five-year generalist teacher education program from a perspective of change. Main research objectives for the project were to challenge the existing situation, develop new educational practices and propose new directions for music teacher education. Pre-service music teachers (PMTs) were of particular interest in the project, in their hybrid role as student and future professionals. The population of PMTs in Norway was mapped (their backgrounds, values, motivations and ambitions), as were values and ideologies in documents from the teacher education institutions. The researchers also explored spaces for critical reflexivity and agency together with PMTs on campus, also PMTs experienced agency in practicum placements were investigated. The researchers engaged in extensive collaboration with PMTs and schools, among other things by means of digital tools to develop interactive educational practices. The research design was mainly action research inspired (explorative), but did also include elements of mixed methods and document studies (mapping). Project results indicate shortcomings with regards to diversity within the music teacher education programs. Structures and plans/documents affect the educational programs and practices, which made it more difficult to employ explorative methods, and to facilitate educational spaces that allow for complexity and the unexpected. The educational programs were found to be heavily influenced by certain values and traditions that will require time to challenge and change. The systematic investigations and explorations in the FUTURED project also point to possible alternative pathways for (music) teacher education. The results have been disseminated to various audiences. Findings have been published in articles and chapters in international journals and volumes, and presented at conferences, national seminars and conferences for researchers, teacher educators, teachers, pre-service music teachers and other music students. In addition to papers and posters, the researchers have further tested a more unconventional format such as the learning jam, where audience and stakeholders are invited into dialogical processes involving dreams, visions, needs and challenges for music education and teacher education have been highlighted. The FUTURED project and its findings have also been presented to the public at libraries, the Arendal political week, in podcasts and in "Lærerutdanningsportalen".

With this proposal, researchers from two of the largest general teacher education (GTE) institutions in Norway (HVL and OsloMet) offer their expertise to critically explore Norwegian music teacher education. The project aims to discuss the current educational situation in GTE Music programs, develop new teaching approaches as well as propose new directions for music teaching and music teacher education. Main research objectives are: To challenge status quo of music teacher education in Norway, to develop innovative and collaborative practices that could foster student's collaborative, critical and democratic capacities. The project will draw on theoretical insigts from critical (music)pedagogy, educational philosophy, cultural studies and public pedagogy. The research design will mainly be educational action research, starting with a review and critical mapping of existing practices, which then initiates the action research cycles of identifying issues, planning action, taking action, evaluating action (primary cycle), followed by taking action, experiencing, understanding and judging. The project is devided into three work packages: 1: Mapping the current situation within music teacher education, including preservice music teachers' backgrounds, values and motives, as well as educational ideologies and structures found in study program documents, curriculum, job adverticements etc. 2: Developing spaces for critical reflexivity and agency withiin music teacher education. 3: Developing collaborative, innovative and interactive music education practices within schools. Expected outcomes of the project are comprehensive overview of music teacher education, curriculum development, new assessment methods and exploratory teaching approaches. Outcomes will be communicated to academic and non-academic audiences, and are expected to impact both (music) teacher education and music in schools. Four international guest researchers are affiliated with the project.
