GLOMO ITN Abstract: In response to pressures of globalisation and language diversity, multinational corporations (MNC) are increasingly adopting common corporate language (CCL) policies across their operations. Research has demonstrated, however, that adopting a CCL, while promoting communication in the company, might have adverse effects, especially at the individual micro- level, where most employees are non-native speakers of the CCL. Varying levels of proficiency might upset the balance of power relations among employees and might engender feelings of insecurity and inferiority. The main research question this project aims to address is how the implementation of a common corporate language (CCL) affects the careers and short- and long-term prospects of multinational corporations’ employees. The study will build on a qualitative case study approach with semi-structured in-depth interviews. Since a central hypothesis is that the level of proficiency in the CCL as a second language plays an important role, proficiency will be included as a variable. Confirmation of this hypothesis will suggest that CCL effective implementation requires a specially designed support framework, which aims to aid and motivate employees in the transition.
