The project will develop, trial and put into operation a fully autonomous ferry for public passenger transport. This ferry is going to be the first in the world to be autonomous from an operational point of view. At the same time, the project offers a unique chance to address the second disruptive force as well: this is because the ferry will be fully electric and exclusively powered by solar energy. Accordingly, the targeted prototype will be 100% carbon neutral and completely emission free, which is of particular importance in an intended urban inner city and short sea operating environment.
The solar passenger ferry is build using a 1 Million USD Grant received by SINTEF as the winner of the 2016’s United Nations Grant “Powering the Future We Want”. The Grant is given to individual and organizations recognizing their leadership and practices in energy for sustainable development. The ferry will operate using electricity generated from a solar PV system installed both on the roof of the ferry and on-shore. Electricity produced on-shore will be fed to the ferry battery at each break between two trips using fast recharging technology. For more info: https://poweringthefuture.un.org/news/awardceremony2016
