Caprock integrity evaluation of the lower Agardhfjellet Formation for CO2 sequestration purposes at Deltaneset, Svalbard (RiS-ID: 11145)

Awarded: NOK 49,391

The shale of the Agardhfjellet Formation is the time-equivalent to Hekkingen Formation in the Barents Sea and Draupne Formation in the North Sea. It is therefor interesting to perform a complete integrity evaluation of the Agardhfjellet Formation as a potential caprock for future CO2 sequestration. At Deltaneset, close to Longyearbyen, the Agardhfjellet Formation is continuously exposed. Through structural characterization of a prominent outcropping normal fault within the targeted formation, the project aims to answer these main scientific questions: - What controls fracturing in organic rich shale? - How do structural elements in Agardhfjellet Formation influence cap rock integrity for CO2 purposes? - Are some elements more likely to be re-activated during CO2 injections?
