Closing the Carbon Window- The Role of CCS in Meeting the Paris Agreement

The purpose of the meeting was to bring together high-level experts, in order to review our knowledge of CCS and its potential for closing the carbon window. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters is a member of The European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and EASAC has recently published the report: Negative emission technologies - What role in meeting the Paris Agreement targets? This report adresses the issue of using negative emission technologies as a means to closing the carbon window. As seen from Norway, if negative emission technologies is going to work, CCS has to be in place. A key question was then as follows: does CCS really represent a technology that will be used in Europe and worldwide?

Arrangementet kom i stand som en følge av en bestilling fra Olje- og Energidepartementet som ønsket en vurdering av Norges CCS-strategi sett med utenlandske øyne. Målsetningen var således å samle internasjonalt annerkjente forskere og ekspertise innenfor CCS og lavutslippsteknologier, og få dem til å vurdere potensialet for CCS teknologien i forhold til å løse klimakrisen. Denne målsetningen anses som oppnådd.
