Awarded: NOK 0.30 mill.

The background for the pre-project "Safe children in dental care: knowledge building, prevention and treatment of needle phobia and dental treatment anxiety" is that a large proportion of the population experiences a high degree of stress, fear, discomfort and avoidance related to dental care, and up to 20% of children and youth suffer from dental treatment anxiety. This can lead to serious impairments of the oral health and reduced quality of life of the individual, and significant expenses for the public dental health service. There is a need for increased knowledge and research on effective prevention and treatment of dental anxiety in children and adolescents. Exploration and testing of new services are necessary. The overarching goal of the pre-project was to develop a main project with the aim of "increasing knowledge of prevalence, development and predictors of needle phobia among children and adolescents and using this knowledge to develop methods for preventing and treating dental treatment anxiety for this group?. We set as the main goal of the pre-project to prepare a scientifically robust application for a main project on prevention and treatment of dental treatment anxiety in children and adolescents. The sub-goals included establishing collaboration with recognized national and international research institutions from multidisciplinary environments, conducting a project group workshop to plan studies in a major project, collaborative meetings with relevant research institutions, visiting residencies at collaborating universities, planning study programs in main projects. of main project and writing of main application. Collaborators in the project at start-up were Kompetansesentet Tannhelse Midt, Karolinska Institutet (KI), The University of Sheffield and NTNU. SINTEF also joined as a partner early on in the project period. Through knowledge gained during the project period, it became clear that more knowledge is needed on prevention of dental treatment anxiety and needle phobia. High incidence of caries, high treatment needs and negative experiences with dental care are key risk factors, and caries prevention is an important preventive measure. This insight resulted in further refinement and definition of the main project, to address caries prevention as a measure to reduce the incidence of dental treatment anxiety and needle phobia. During the project period, we carried out the planned insight work and developed a new main project with a well-established project group, including collaboration with industry. The purpose of the pre-project has thus been achieved.
