«Overgang mot nullutslipp - en ny type renseenhet for metanutslipp fra magerbrennende gassmotorer»

Alternative title: Transition to zero emissions: a novel purifying unit for reduction of methane emission from lean burn gas engines

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

Transition to zero emissions: a novel purifying unit for reduction of methane emission from gas engines The project aims to develop a new type of energy-efficient aftertreatment system that reduces/eliminates methane emission from gas engines. Several “proof of concept” tests with promising results have already been carried out. In line with the increased environmental focus, there has been a transition to increased use of gas engines, especially in the maritime sector. Gas engines have an environmental advantage over diesel-fueled engines, as they emit less carbon dioxide (CO2), sulphur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Nevertheless, there are environmental challenges associated with the use of gas engines. Gas engines emit unburned methane (CH4), a gas that has 25 times greater climatic effect than carbon dioxide. Cleansing methane gas from the exhaust is a major challenge as it requires a high temperature which is expensive to achieve. The project proposes a technical innovation that contributes to the purification process of methane gas and ensures that gas engines remain a viable and sustainable option in the future. The novel aftertreatment system ensures efficient heating of methane gas and allows for the necessary temperature increase for successful purification of methane. The aftertreatment system will be designed to fit both future and existing gas engines. The aim of the project is to develop a full-scale prototype, which will be the basis for scaling to a varied range of applications. The project will help to reduce/eliminate methane emissions from gas engines, starting with the maritime sector.
