E-INFRA 2018 - a national e-infrastructure for science

The applicant for this call for proposals is UNINETT Sigma2 AS, hereafter Sigma2. Sigma2 is a subsidiary company of UNINETT AS and its head office is in Trondheim. UNINETT AS operates the national high-speed network for research and education and provides national services for identity management, authentication and authorization that are vital elements in e-infrastructure and ensure the security and integrity of research processes. Sigma2 has the administrative and operational responsibility for the Norwegian national infrastructure for computing sciences and offers services for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Data Storage. Sigma2 is secured long-term basic funding from the RCN and the consortium partners (which are the universities in Oslo (UiO), Bergen (UiB), Trondheim (NTNU) and Tromsø (UiT)) in a 5+5 year scheme with evaluation every fifth year. The main objective of this proposal is to secure sufficient additional funding for investments in computing and storage resources for the national e-infrastructure. These investments are planned for the period 2020-2022.

The overall scope of this project is to secure sufficient funding for investments in computing and storage resources for the national e-Infrastructure for the period 2020 - 2022. The project represents phase 3 of the planned renewal and expansion of the national e-infrastructure which started with phase 1 in 2016 funded by the project "E-INFRA 2014 - a national e-infrastructure for science". The project will ensure that national research communities have access to state-of-the-art e-infrastructure for science. Main project deliveries are: 1. Expansion in capacity of the HPC Machine provisionally called B1, located at NTNU 2. A new HPC Machine provisionally called A2, which is going to replace the existing HPC machine FRAM as well as secure sufficient capacity due to growing demand 3. Expansion of the storage system NIRD (National Infrastructure for Research Data) due to growing demand 4. Expansion of the Service Platform due to growing demand 5. Expansion of the TSD (Tjenester for Sensitive Data) service due to growing demand 6. Access to European e-Infrastructure
