Alternative title: E-INFRA 2018 - Nasjonal e-Infrastruktur for forskning

Awarded: NOK 337.6 mill.

The applicant for this call for proposals is Sigma2 AS. Sigma2 AS has strategic responsibility for and manages the national e-infrastructure for large-scale data- and computational science in Norway. Sigma2 provides services for high-performance computing and data storage to individuals and groups involved in research and education at all Norwegian universities and colleges, and other publicly funded organizations and projects. We also coordinate Norway's participation in international collaborations on e-infrastructure. Our activities are jointly financed by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and the Sigma2 consortium partners, which are the universities in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and Tromsø. This collaboration goes by the name NRIS ? Norwegian Research Infrastructure Services. The main objective of this proposal is to secure sufficient additional funding for investments in computing and storage resources for the national e-infrastructure. These investments are planned for the period 2020-2022.

The overall scope of this project is to secure sufficient funding for investments in computing and storage resources for the national e-Infrastructure for the period 2020 - 2022. The project represents phase 3 of the planned renewal and expansion of the national e-infrastructure which started with phase 1 in 2016 funded by the project "E-INFRA 2014 - a national e-infrastructure for science". The project will ensure that national research communities have access to state-of-the-art e-infrastructure for science. Main project deliveries are: 1. Expansion in capacity of the HPC Machine provisionally called B1, located at NTNU 2. A new HPC Machine provisionally called A2, which is going to replace the existing HPC machine FRAM as well as secure sufficient capacity due to growing demand 3. Expansion of the storage system NIRD (National Infrastructure for Research Data) due to growing demand 4. Expansion of the Service Platform due to growing demand 5. Expansion of the TSD (Tjenester for Sensitive Data) service due to growing demand 6. Access to European e-Infrastructure
