FORINFRA-Nasj.sats. forskn.infrastrukt

National network of Advanced Proteomics Infrastructure

Alternative title: Nasjonalt nettverk for avansert proteomikk-infrastruktur

Awarded: NOK 57.0 mill.

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins. Compared to the genome, the proteome is highly dynamic and more complex. Proteome level information is fundamentally important for unraveling disease mechanisms, finding new drug targets, and developing personalized medicines. In addition, proteomics is central to e.g. the advancement of biotechnological research within plants, animals and microbes. The main goal of NAPI is to establish a national technological and scientific infrastructure for proteomics research. Partners include all Norwegian proteomics core facilities as well as research groups with a strong focus on proteomics technology development.

Proteomics is an essential part of modern life science. NAPI partners are highly synergistic, and have complementary areas of expertise. Compared to the genome, the proteome is highly dynamic and more complex. Hence, modern proteomics relies heavily on high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) instruments, which allow for deeper and faster proteome characterization than what has been possible before. One major goal of NAPI is to expand the capacity and possibilities for advanced MS-based proteomics in Norway by upgrading the current instrumentation at selected NAPI nodes with next generation high-resolution MS-instruments. We will establish an electronic infrastructure to keep track of project submission from the users, data handling and storage. All projects will have equal access to the instruments. NAPI will focus on all the main fields in MS-based proteome analysis, providing expertise in quantitative proteomics, characterization of post-translational modifications, analysis of protein interactions, and proteome data analysis. NAPI will also establish and make available novel proteomics techniques such as metaproteomics, imaging-MS, antibody arrays and epigenomics/epitranscriptomics proteomics and modomics in Norway. Further, NAPI will be active in training and education next-generation life science researchers, and organize advanced workshops and courses in different areas of proteomics.
